while red axes s ode to the sun is still running strong one and a half years after its release (it even made it into last year s top 50 at resident advisor), here comes the heavyweight remix package: german wunderkind konstantin sibold is hitchhiking the original into afro rave territories with vodoo percussions and a hauting bassline that will be hard to escape from. fango from the italian degustibis family continues his string of strong remixes as he turns the original into a rough beat version just to drop the melody in the break for maximum dancefloor mayhem. and last but not least the axes themselves come up with a tropical house version that works any time any place. and thus the sun continues to shine.

that cyberpunk chameleon of styles, manchester’s pride and dancefloor master ruf dug is back on wax on copenhagen’s music for dreams. following up the first 12” of remixes that came out last year, we once again re-visit the island life of monsieur ruffy and his debut full length album “island” (recorded during a sojourn on guadeloupe). first up we have italians on the mix. hi-jacking ruffy’s tribute to wally badarou, leo mas and fabrice opt to do their own thing: which is churning out a bouncing house belter of their own that bears little resemblance to the original lo-fi synth reverie. closer to the original then, is fellow mancunian andi hanley’s take on the same track. adding sparse percussion and and a simple but effective drum beat, this take seems to simply be an uncovered second half of the original, where it finally takes off for the dancefloor. “mangrove dub” is reworked by fresh-on-the-scene aussie producer tropical hi-fi who creates a brilliant version full of moist ambient textures and reverb-heavy dub treatments. at last but definitely not least, seahawks turns the whimsical hippie folk ballad “le rayon vert” into a more intense and neatly dressed affair, focusing on the instrumental parts and lifting aside vocalist nev cotte’s contribution to the original. still with a mindful of tropical dreams and the ocean shore close at hand, but in a more introvert vini reilly kind of way. essential package.

after the first release in june 2016 and #002 following in early 2017, the berlin- based imprint through these eyes is ready to announce the next release. this time it features two heavy jungle tracks by austrian based artist sun people. on the name giving a-side of his through these eyes release sun people uses an iconic vocal sample, adds a gut-wrenching 95 style bass-line and tops it all off with some of the finest razor sharp percussions in the genre to deliver one of the most stomping tunes you ll hear this summer. nu gun on the flipside gets a lot more dubby with it s perfect jungle beat edits and moody chord stabs - all that laid out over a well known vocal sample. it can easily be considered a prime example of sun people s signature sound which is heavily rooted in dub, jungle and juke/footwork.

fold joins the shall not fade family with his jazz infused ‘doin bits’ ep. rob glassett aka fold unleashes three broken beat house jams, accompanied by a dreamy remix by frits wentink for shall not fade. the four track ep features groovy cuts, perfectly suited for the dancefloor.

berlin-based producer, yapacc take on the original sees him transferring the song into a dancefloor-ready track whilst subtly maintaining the ambience of the original. off-beat house-esque sub-rhythms and a melodic bassline helps to keep the energy of the track moving forward, whilst the top end guitars and vocals keep the listener interest up until the very last second. russian-based dave pads remix also helps the original move onto the dancefloor with this incredibly funky, groovy-laiden back beat which simultaneously manages to hold onto the original tracks esthetical ambience. euphoric house stabs and a continuous layered texture sits behind the tracks groove, adding a sense of nostalgia and depth to an already emotive original.

camea returns with the third release on her neverwhere imprint, titled vanish , this spring. in her new single, she digs deep on her drum machine into studio 1-esque territory, using alluring classic minimal techno grooves as a back drop for her seductively soulful, selfconflicted vocals. camea not only captures a timeless micro-house vibe in this piece, but she continues to push her sound forward as well as her love for avant-guard techno. up next is delft imprint boss, la-4a, best known for his analogue vintage roland drum machine productions. he has laid down an irresistible 303 break-beat club mix of camea s track in the a2 spot. his dance cut of her vocals over bass driven percussion is a perfect counter piece to the original, and compliments the sound from his recent acid techno album phonoautograph . on the flip side, berlin techno legend and ostgut ton/berghain resident tobias. gives his graceful interpretation. he has reworked the original into a tasteful, dark, spacious 8-minute minimal techno piece, with percolating panning and filters on the vocals. as usual with tobias., he clearly conveys his undeniable expertise and instinct for exquisite dance music. with this release, camea is also marking the 2nd anniversary of her cult neverwhere radio show this spring, having produced twenty-four, two-hour episodes with exclusive dj mixes and guests. the show currently has residencies on digitally imported, tsugi radio and ibiza sonica, and camea has quickly established herself as a driving force in the left-field techno community, and a passionate advocate of underground radio.

sunlightsquare s first single of 2017, oyelo, is a mixture of jazz, cuban and house music in its most authentic form. starting with moody latin-jazz piano and sun-drenched live percussion played by master percussionist giovanni imparato, the track is driven by the classic house beat of the tr-909 - the legendary 1980 s drum machine. ronnie scott s resident cuban singer rene alvarez delivers the impassioned vocals, followed by the main man claudio passavanti s heated montuno piano riffs, which combine seamlessly to create a blissful, dance-floor experience. it s a perfect marriage of organic grooves, lush beats and soulful vocals, joining the dots between different generations of latin dance music.
for the b side, london based, japanese producer kay suzuki transformed the original track into his signature psychedelic journey in 2 parts. his by the sea mix takes you to the havana beach with its synthesiser generated waves & seagulls right from the intro. the stripped-down beats and vocals are smoothly laid out with warm analogue synth textures, giving more space to claudio s tasteful latin-jazz keyboard improvisations. in contrast, the drum dub goes to the opposite side of the spectrum, all the musical elements have been removed, focusing solely on the live percussion and the raw tr-909 beat, all dubbed out with tape delays for a classic cosmic dub treatment.

the checkerboard squares’ ‘double cookin’’ is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels’ all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of j dilla even more than when he was alive. there’s an ethereal quality to jay dee’s works, part boom bap but more mellow. mellow, but never soft. and dilla never stopped making beats, his mpc was by his side until the very end. it now resides in the smithsonian. due the prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of dilla material – some coming to light even this many years after his passing. in the world of hip hop, no one’s mother is more famous that ma dukes. go ahead, name check chuck d’s mom or chance the rapper’s mom or ti’s mother – without hitting google. and one of the reasons we all know ma dukes is her tireless effort to maintain dilla’s legacy. this release is yet another step in that direction. presented here, from the official ma dukes collection, are 15 works by jay dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time.

one half of the junior boys, jeremy greenspan makes his second appearance on jiaolong with the aid of none other than legendary, algorithmic composer, laurie spiegel. those not familiar with her work, spiegel is best known for her use of interactive and algorithmic logic as part of the compositional process, spiegel worked with buchla and electronic music laboratories synthesizers and subsequently many early, often experimental and prototype-level music and image generation systems. in the mid 80s, her most widely used software was the music mouse. here, greenspan works her piece >drums< into a confident dj tool, rolling steadily with angular electronic effects over a solid, weighty pulse. >sirius shake< employs a classic kompakt-style schaffle beat, mapping a curious robotic waltz.

hamid s h+ (hpls) label continues to plough a furrow into the freakiest corners of the minimal scene, keeping the spirit of labels like telegraph and minibar alive with off-kilter beats, freaky sampling and wayward synth work from lesser known operators. g76 is up on the a side with the wonky wonders of -father-, packing some seriously squelchy monosynth bass and plenty of beat trickery to wriggle under the skin of the most deviant dancers. h+dk (hamid and denis kaznacheev) tackle the b-side with -tachtagol connection-, keeping the drums as slender as possible and using a sweet but subtle pad as the focus of the track. it s a simple approach, but utterly effective.

these ones keep floors moving! championing an inimitable groove, the possé present three club ready tracks on their season s greetings ep, combining the know-how of house with the energy and spontaneity of a live band set up. recorded at the legendary citisound and rec studios in sydney, the tracks on ken004 each deliver different perceptions of the up-tempo house beat they’re quickly becoming known for. the title track is probably the heaviest delivery from the label to date, highlighted by the iconic drip of the tb-303. cheeky guitar licks and 808 rhythms jump in and out of the tracks on the ep, keeping it fresh on the live tip.

hyperdub+ warp records artists babyfather and gaika rework two 18+ tracks from their second album collect. hyperdubs dean blunt, a category-rejecting artist and an art-pop provocateur tackles drama under his babyfather guise, looping a low slung swagger beat under the vocals of dj escrow and samia mirza. warp records multi-disciplined south london artist gaika rips apart glow into a discordant sub-low bassline drone, pitching samias vocal as slow as can go, harsh high pitch tones and field recordings. one of the strongest things we’ve heard from the divisive producer.

vinyl only reach their seventh release with a fresh grip of lesser known producers bringing high grade grooves to the table. bubbadog opens the 12inch up in a woozy fashion with the warbling piano chords of goin round, capturing a time-slip mood that carries through to the dusty jazz soaked beat down of minus the majors strole on through. on the b-side, alex zuiev gets into an exotic, chiming, 80s-inflected mood on down by the river, creating a slow-burning dancefloor heater out of classic ingredients. ugly frankie finishes the ep off with the stripped down funk of your ears look great

baltra has been plying his trade for a few years now, dealing in a distinctly retro brand of house music that could easily pass for a forgotten chicago cut were it not for subtle touches of advanced production tucked away in the mix. on this single for tape throb, the warbling synth tones of up 2 you sound like a perfect fit for the label, while twist of fate smooths things out a more melancholic mood atop a classic jack beat. feds watching strains under a cloud of grit that adds to the backwards glancing vibe of the record, while dis aura opts for a marginally more modern approach spelt out by the plush polysynth tones that pulse throughout.

folamour represents the present and future sounds of the disco/house hybrid, staying true to the glitterbox sonic philosophy. his tracks share the same production values as the timeless records from classic disco imprints in the late 70s, melodies are super-tightly harmonised, instrumentation is lively and the rhythms are designed purely for dance. ‘the power and the blessing of unity’ is almost a mini album, exploring all the facets of folamour’s sophisticated house and disco tendencies. the title track sparkles with brass stabs and a textbook swinging disco beat, ‘island of recent father’ breaks things down into synthy house goodness, ‘let’s grab some smokes’ channels a more contemporary low-fi sound and bringing it home with ‘home beyond the clouds’, folamour closes with uplifting house hooks and percussion. it’s a real trip.

ou just can t beat those super secret squirrel trax releases on guesthouse, one of the most sizable house labels operating of the bay area. on this third installment, mark funk and danny cruz keep things live and direct with the impassioned soulful house of -givin my love-. peter brown then slides in with the tracky pressure of -funkosphere-, which comes with added flute for good measure. dj mes also strikes a headier groove, but teases the ingredients on -state of affairs- out into an effervescent peak time floor filler, and then hazzaro brings it home with the rallying, roller-skate call of -saturday-. other releases on guestho

green village is a label operating out of jersey city that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. this various artists 12- plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. theft & toyc bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music -atlantic-, while bd1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. eighth ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named -whip-, and then etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of -predator-.

science fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. this ep is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of roland corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of exterminador, chromed by ngly distortions in track 02. dj nephil on the b side introduces a solid visionary chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

the limited, hand-stamped presentation of the canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. nyra s pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like -opening rhyme- are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. while the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. -tape trek- is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. -galaktik- meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it s far from an obvious throwback track. suffice it to say, we ll have whatever nyra s having.

having sprung into action with the sol explorer ep on girasole, william caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing slapfunk. as the label s remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we re treated to low slung leftfield beats on -booty call- before the peppier broken beat groove of -ain t no joke-. -creepin - and -g groove- head into more familiar territory for slapfunk fans, but there s still space for the crisp, laid back funk of -tales from the west- and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of -yes we do- thrown in for good measure.

there are few operators out there with the understated skills to match colin macbean. the man known best as mr g is a master of the stripped down, simple groove and he s been invited to holic trax to demonstrate that with two productions of the most immaculate house music. -soba shioyaki- hovers with a touch of mystery in its melodic hooks - a punchy monosynth basslines and sweetly shifting chords striking a melancholic note perfect for heads-down moments. -komorembi- is more overtly deep, using an urgent shuffle beat to propel spacious chords through the atmosphere in that inimitable mr g style.

proof of the rude health of the australian underground abounds with this new label from phile, who step out with a self-titled debut ep that tells you all you need to know. this is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on -found in blood- are a visceral force to behold. -marauder- is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. the analogue dirt of -abhor- is positively evil, and that s before karina utomo s none-scarier vocals come into play. brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

with -nekromant- the labelheads avidus are back on empore music, to present their darker side. the original consists of powerful arpeggiators rolling on a triplet-beat with a trancy vibe. the remix from jens-uwe beyer, formerly known as popnoname and as the curator of the label magazine, delivers a dreamy remix from the original with nice organic percussive elements. berlin based sebastian voigt, who has been making waves with his release on outcast oddity, completes the remixes with a straightened interpretation of the original back to a 4 to the floor beat, even adding even more drive and power if compared to the original. the ep comes full circle with a beatless -synthapella- from the original.

alemayehu eshete is considered the golden voice of ethopia. since his first hit single seul in 1961 he has become the father figure of the soulful stream of ethopian music. in ethiopia no other musician adapted the newest trends from the us soul scene as consequently as alemayehu did. with this new 7- he continues his soulful approach on ethopian music. his funky classic alteleyeshegnem is here re-interpretated by the philophon house band in an even funkier way than the original. a tough beat is crisscrossed by mystic harmonies and a pumping bassline. temar ledje points out the sweet side of master alemayehu. this is another classic tune that comes dosed with a rejuvenating cure by the philophon production team. just listen! the cooperation between alemayehu eshete and philophon was initiated by listros e.v. berlin with support by the federal cultural foundation of germany.

first chapter of cassette beat tape series most blunted is a debut from warsaw-based producer and live performer bass jan other (privately an acclaimed visual artist, illustrator and graphic designer jan estrada-osmycki). stylistically, washed by waves varies from dub techno jams to syncopated, jazz-funk-oriented beats with lots of pads, space and random events. technically, the album consists of layers of sculpted synthetic sounds made using a teenage engineering op-1, a yamaha dx7 and digital production. produced in limited run of 100 purple cassettes with risography artwork designed by author himself. each item includes a free digital download code.
